Hello, I'm Susan Doran, an artist rooted in Angelica, NY, and currently utilizing this inspiring space as my creative sanctuary.
Join me on my journey as an artist in the 2024 Rural and Traditional Arts Fellowship by attending a presentation titled “The Lost Art of Sentimental Hairwork,” where you can learn more about this art form. Crafted meticulously from human hair, Victorian Hair Wreaths showcase elaborate designs, intricately twisted or braided to evoke the beauty of floral arrangements.
Working from the historic Belvidere Cornerstone, a Carpenter Gothic structure dating back to 1860 and proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places, I'll be immersed in the craftsmanship of the Victorian era. Situated at the heart of Allegany County, this iconic structure provides an inspiring backdrop for fostering community involvement through the creation of this artwork, which will be titled “Community Unity Wreath.”
After a presentation, if you wish, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to the project by donating a lock of hair. Each lock symbolizes an individual, but when interwoven together, they will form a showpiece representing the community.
The public is invited to witness the creative process firsthand by visiting the Belvidere Cornerstone on several occasions, observing as the wreath gradually takes shape.
Visit the website, facebook, or instagram for more information and a schedule of presentations.
Thank you for considering being a part of my artwork.
